How to copy Congress's stock trades

Updated

To copy Congress's stock trades, pick a member, see the basket of stocks their filings show, and place those orders in your own brokerage. When they file again, you adjust.

Members of Congress have to report their stock trades under the STOCK Act, so all of this is public record. Disclosed reads every filing and builds each basket for $9.99 a month, one plan, every portfolio. Here is each step, what it costs and what to know first.

Step by step

  1. Pick who to copy

Open a member's page. Each one shows their disclosed trades, each stock's move since the filing, and a link to the official filing behind every trade. The leaderboard ranks members by what a copy of their trades has done beside the S&P 500.

  2. See the basket

The basket is the top disclosed holdings, weighted to their estimated proportions. In the Disclosed app, type what you want to put in and it works out the dollars for each stock.

  3. Place each order in your own brokerage

Each stock links into the brokerage you already use: Robinhood, Public, Fidelity, Charles Schwab, Webull, E*TRADE, Interactive Brokers, moomoo or tastytrade. You review and place every order yourself. Your money stays in your account, and we never hold it.

  4. Hear when they file again

Disclosed Pro sends a push when someone you follow files, usually the night the filing posts: what they bought and what they sold. Open it and change your own position if you want to.

What to know before you copy

  • A filing comes after the trade. The law gives up to 45 days for most reports. In our record since 2023, the typical stock trade reached the public 25 days in the House, 35 in the Senate, 64 in the executive branch. You buy at today's price, not theirs.
  • A filing gives a range, not an amount: for example, $15,001 to $50,000. Every basket built from ranges is an estimate.
  • A filing shows trades, not an account statement. Each basket is our estimate of what is held, from the trades on file.
  • What you buy is your own decision. Disclosed is public-record information, not investment advice, and past trades don't guarantee future results.

Doing it by hand

The filings are public. You can read them yourself on the House Clerk, the Senate's eFD system and the Office of Government Ethics, then work out the sizes yourself. What the $9.99 buys is that work done: every filing read, the basket built, and a push when someone you follow files.
